Average expenditure on health insurance in 2000 was highest in Salzburg, with ATS 3,069 (EUR 223.03) and Vienna with ATS 2,651  (EUR 192.66), followed by Tyrol with ATS 2,468 (EUR 179.36),  Styria with ATS 2,422 (EUR 176.01) and Carinthia with ATS 2,409 (EUR 175.07).

The Provinces of Vorarlberg with ATS 2,058(Euro 149.56)and Upper Austria with ATS 1,536 (EUR 111.63) are below the Austrian average. Bringing up the rear are Lower Austria with ATS 957 (EUR 69.55) and Burgenland with ATS 865 (EUR 62.86) expenditure per head on private health insurance in 2000.

Here it must be borne in mind that the health insurance tariffs are based on costs of treatment ( e.g. doctors and hospitals) which vary from one Province to another.Health is at the top of the Austrian wish list for the future, according to a UNIQA study.
