UNIQA increases premium volume and reduces expenses

UNIQA Group shows premium growth of 7.4% in 2001

Austria’s leading insurance group, UNIQA, in the year just concluded increased – according to provisional data –its premium income from direct business by 7.4% to EUR 2,728.58 million. The share contributed by the foreign companies of the Group rose – also because of the take-over of the Polish Polonia S.A. and Polonia Zycie S.A. - by 53% to EUR 261.1 million. Disregarding the two companies taken over in June 2001, the premium growth amounted to 4.0%.

In Austria, the operating insurance companies (UNIQA Personenversicherung, UNIQA Sachversicherung, Raiffeisen Versicherung, Salzburger Landes-Versicherung and Call Direct together with the 50%-subsidiary MLP achieved a billed premium growth in direct business amounting to 4.1% or EUR 2,467.53 million.

This premium growth was characterised by positive developments in all lines.

-         Life assurance (incl. MLP) +2.8% to EUR 1,174.01 million

-         Damage and accident insurance+6.5% to EUR 695.33 million

-     Health insurance +3.8% to EUR 598.19 million.


By the determined applications of the savings programme, the UNIQA Group in Austria succeeded in decoupling the development of costs from the development of premiums.  Whilst earned premiums (excluding single-premium policies) in 2001 grew by 5.8%, over the same period costs declined by 4.2%.

The UNIQA Group companies in Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Croatia, Italy and Switzerland in 2001 achieved a billed premium volume in direct business of EUR 261.12 million (+53.2%).

The major portion of this, EUR 177.01 million (+74.4%), was accounted for by damage and accident insurance, followed by health insurance, with 66.67 million (+12.7%) and life assurance with EUR 17.43 million (+77.3%).

The share of the Group’s premium volume accounted for by foreign business grew in the past year from 6.9% to 9.9%.
